The staff and partners of the Regional Sustainable Energy Centre of Excellence for Sub Sahara Africa, Education and Outreach area inform a variety of audiences about Sustainable Energy research, energy concerns, and sustainability issues affecting our planet. Their goal is to broaden the understanding of current issues in Renewable Energy for the general public as well as students and educators at the Centre, at undergraduate, and graduate levels. A strong emphasis will be on using critical thinking, quantitative reasoning, and systems-based logic in the development of Renewable Energy classroom materials and other informational resources. Because Renewable Energy research and development are important contemporary issues, Education and Outreach members will participate in various programs and events to present research from Centre laboratories in a way that is accessible and interesting to a broad array of audiences.
Summer research experiences for undergraduates and post-graduates will be promoted. To prepare the next generation of Sub Sahara Sustainable Energy scientists, The Centre will provide interdisciplinary research opportunities to graduate students, post-doctors, and visiting scientists. In addition to these activities in higher education, The Centre will be teaming up with many Universities. In Africa, we need to raise awareness of cellulosic bio fuels, carbon emissions from energy use, solar energy, solar thermal, wind, hydro and obstacles to a successful bio fuel economy. Targeting fifth-graders, the Sustainable Energy Centre of Excellence will use education and outreach efforts to make information accessible to the general public and reach students when they still are excited about science. The Sustainable Energy Centre of Excellence will offer different courses on 23 Masters of Science, (M.Sc) in Sustainable Energy in different fields and areas of specialization, which will be integrated in the near future. In total, about 78 professors and staff members will contribute to the courses. All areas from the Centre of Excellence will be covered in 2011.
In order to encourage knowledge transfer and learning, Ph.D. students who are active in Sustainable Energy will meet each other at an annual national conference. It is proposed to organize such an event also for Ph.D. students active in all the courses. The two events can be combined in the form of a Summer School and a top-quality knowledge exchange platform. Visiting professors will be invited to teach in specific Sustainable Energy subjects, so that M.Sc. students also benefit. To enhance cooperation between the Sustainable Energy Centre of Excellence, it is proposed that in every promotion committee, an external member from the other technical universities must be present. As a spin-off of the current centre-formation, a new initiative will be started for knowledge transfer on sustainable energy to secondary schools. Sustainable energy is an ideal carrier for integrating education on mathematics, physics, biology and chemistry and will promote enthusiasm for technical studies.
